We Won the Battle for the Language Access Campaign!

On February 22nd KCMO City Council overwhelmingly voted 12-1 to establish the Office of Language Access and allocate an impressive $900,000 budget for the upcoming year! AIRR and KC Tenants led this campaign to engage the most impacted community members to have a say in this policy. At the March budget hearing we had over 10 testimonies, urging the city council to fully fund the office with $900,000.

This is a notable reminder that without all of the support given to the campaign from the teams and the community, the campaign would not have been possible, and the City Council might have opted for a less functional solution such as a large contract with Google Translate (Which is not flexible nor functional.)

¡Ganamos la Batalla en la Campaña de Acceso al Idioma!

¡El 22 de febrero, el Consejo Municipal de KCMO votó abrumadoramente 12-1 para establecer la Oficina de Acceso al Idioma y asignar un impresionante presupuesto de $900,000 para el próximo año! AIRR y KC Tenants lideraron esta campaña involucrando a los miembros de la comunidad más afectados para que tengan voz y voto en esta política. En la audiencia presupuestaria de marzo tuvimos más de 10 testimonios, instando al Concejo Municipal a financiar completamente la oficina con $900,000.

Este es un recordatorio notable de que sin todo el apoyo brindado a la campaña por parte de las organizaciones y la comunidad, la campaña no habría sido posible y el Consejo Municipal podría haber optado por una solución menos funcional, como un  contrato con Google Translate. (El cual no es flexible ni funcional).

Latina Day at The Capitol

Latinas from all over Kansas met for Latina Day at the Capitol in Topeka, where many of them (us) experienced legislative hearings and stepped foot at the capitol for the first time. In the event, there were Latinas of all ages, starting from high school, who learned about their political power and discussed the struggles of their culture not embracing it and further discussed ways to overcome those boundaries.

“I feel like I’m important,” a woman commented at the end of the event, emphasizing the impact of the conversation and experience.

Día de las Latinas en el Capitolio

Latinas de todo Kansas se reunieron para el Día de las Latinas en el Capitolio de Topeka, donde muchas de ellas (nosotras) asistieron a audiencias legislativas y pisaron el Capitolio por primera vez. En el evento, hubo latinas de todas las edades, desde muchachas de preparatoria, que aprendieron sobre su poder político y hablaron de la difícil perspectiva que la cultura latina tiene acerca de la política y  además discutieron formas de superar esos límites.

“Me siento importante”, comentó una mujer al final del evento, enfatizando el impacto de la conversación y la experiencia.

Advocacy in Jefferson City, MO

In March, AIRR made two trips to Jefferson City. March 11th, AIRR advocates traveled to give testimony against Senate Bill 1372 which would bar undocumented students from enrolling into public higher education institutions. On March 26th, our Missouri Immigration Policy Coalition organized an Advocacy Day in Defense of Immigrant Rights, for which members of the coalition met with nearly 40 senators, representatives, or their legislative offices to explain the repercussions of anti-immigrant legislation coming up in Missouri.

Abogacía en Jefferson City, MO

En marzo, AIRR realizó dos viajes a Jefferson City. El 11 de marzo, defensores de AIRR viajaron para dar testimonio contra el Proyecto de Ley del Senado 1372, el cual impediría a los estudiantes indocumentados inscribirse en instituciones públicas de educación superior. El 26 de marzo, nuestra Coalición de Políticas de Inmigración en Missouri organizó un Día de Acción en Defensa de los Derechos de les Inmigrantes, en el cual los miembros de la coalición se reunieron con casi 40 senadores, representantes, o sus oficinas legislativas para explicar las repercusiones de la legislación antiinmigrante que se avecina en Missouri.

Soñando con Volar Gallery

On March first, the Art Show, “Soñando con Volar”(Dreaming of Taking Flight) premiered displaying art pieces that reflected the inequity of access to higher education in Missouri to immigrant students of various statuses. We heard stories from impacted students, poetry and music from local musicians and students from Harmony Project.

Escuchamos historias de estudiantes impactados, poesía y música de músicos locales y estudiantes de Harmony Project.

Community Forums for Safe & Welcoming Campaign

With the relentless setbacks for our Safe & Welcoming, we decided to keep pushing forward for what we know its fair and needed by the community. All through out March, we held community forums, two in Spanish and two in English. The forums gave an update to the community about the campaign and explained why the government has yet to deliver these ID’s despite its ordinance being passed. We discussed how to execute our political power to make effective the ordinance and campaign for the ID’s to be issued.

Con las implacables complicaciones para nuestra campaña Seguro & Bienvenido, decidimos seguir luchando por lo que sabemos que es justo y necesario para la comunidad. A lo largo de marzo realizamos foros comunitarios, dos en español y dos en inglés. Los foros brindaron una actualización a la comunidad sobre la campaña y explicaron por qué el Gobierno aún no ha entregado estas identificaciones, a pesar de que se aprobó su ordenanza. Discutimos cómo ejecutar nuestro poder político para hacer efectiva la ordenanza y hacer campaña para que se emitan las identificaciones.

Anti-Immigrant Legislation in MO

In our Missouri Immigration Policy Coalition and as AIRR, we have been preparing for the aggressive and rowdy anti-immigration legislation drafted in Missouri. Being on a swivel for all bills and superbills introduced in both houses, witnessing overwhelming amounts of these being introduced and tracking them in each process. Below is a list of aggressive anti-immigration bills tracked by Kyna Iman, the coalition’s legislstive tracker. To have our community informed and take action, AIRR has created and showcased informational graphics that call our community to action.

The most passing-probability threatening are HB1413 (passed the house March 27, now going to Senate) and HCS for 2364, 2470 and 2523.

Legislación Antiinmigrante en MO

En nuestra Coalición de Políticas de Inmigración en Missouri y como AIRR, nos hemos estado preparando para la legislación agresivamente antiinmigrante que esta siendo constantemente redactada en Missouri.  Estando atentos a todos los proyectos de ley y superproyectos de ley presentados en ambas cámaras, siendo testigos de la introducción de abrumadoras cantidades de estos y haciéndoles seguimiento en cada paso de sus procesos legislativos. A continuación se enlistan proyectos de ley antiinmigrantes reportados por Kyna Iman, la seguidora legislativa de la coalición. Para mantener a nuestra comunidad informada y tomar medidas, AIRR ha creado y mostrado gráficos informativos que llaman a nuestra comunidad a tomar acción.

Las que amenazan con mayor probabilidad de aprobación son la HB1413 (aprobada  por la Camara de Representantes el 27 de marzo, ahora se dirige al Senado) y el sub de comite para 2364, 2470 and 2523.

Anti-Immigrant Legislation in KS

AIRR is working in partnership with the Latino Community Network and other organizations to track anti-immigrant bills in Kansas. This is happening nationwide.

The bills in Kansas that we have been watching are:

SB 172 - “Creating the Kansas land and military installation protection act to prohibit foreign principals from countries of concern from holding any interest in certain real property in this state.” Previously, this bill was very broad and included prohibitions on residential property. Because of our collective work, the bill covers commercial land.

SB 522- “Creating the crime of unlawful entry into the state of Kansas and requiring notification of federal immigration authorities upon arrest for such offense.” DO NOT GET ALARMED, this bill has not moved or received a hearing, but we are watching it.

Legislación Antiinmigrante en KS

AIRR está trabajando en asociación con Latino Community Network y otras organizaciones para hacer seguimiento a proyectos de ley antiinmigrantes en Kansas. Esto está sucediendo en todo el país.

Los proyectos de ley en Kansas que hemos estado observando son:

SB 172 - “Crea la ley de protección de instalaciones militares y terrenos de Kansas para prohibir a los extranjeros de países de interés tener cualquier interés en ciertos bienes inmuebles en este estado”. Anteriormente, este proyecto de ley era muy general e incluía prohibiciones sobre la propiedad residencial. Debido a nuestro trabajo colectivo, el proyecto de ley solo cubre terrenos comerciales.

SB 522- “Crea el delito de entrada ilegal al estado de Kansas y requiriendo notificación a las autoridades federales de inmigración al momento del arresto por tal delito”. NO SE ALARME, este proyecto de ley no se ha movido ni recibido audiencia, pero lo estamos observando.

Updates

SB 4 was supposed to go into effect March 5th, but both the federal government and the ACLU issued a lawsuit, which paused enforcement of the law while the case was being heard.

As of March 27, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals extended a temporary block on Senate Bill 4, meaning the state cannot enforce the law. SB 4 will have a hearing on April 3rd to hear arguments on the legality of the law.

Actualizaciones

Se suponía que la ley SB 4 entraría en vigor el 5 de marzo, pero tanto el gobierno federal como la ACLU presentaron una demanda que detuvo la ejecución de la ley mientras se escuchaba el caso.

A partir del 27 de marzo, el Tribunal de Apelaciones del Quinto Circuito de Estados Unidos extendió un bloqueo temporal a SB 4, lo que significa que el estado no puede hacer cumplir la ley. La SB 4 tendrá una audiencia el 3 de abril para escuchar argumentos sobre la legalidad de la ley.
